I talk, type, speak and share a lot of my life online and at technology industry events, but on my personal blog, I make the rules, so I decided to name it Forever in Beta. Why? Well, let's look at what "beta" means.

What is beta?
In finance, one determines the beta of an asset within a portfolio using this hunk of an equation:

In technology, beta refers to a phase of the software release life cycle.
A software release life cycle refers to the phases of development and maturity for a piece of computer software — ranging from its initial development, to its eventual release, and updated versions of the released version to help improve it software or fix bugs still present in the software.
Redefining beta
I prefer my own definition to that of Wikipedia. I define beta as a work in progress, or W.I.P. This means most technology, like human beings, are always in beta, progressing, iterating.

Image via Wikipedia1. I am constantly beta testing new technology and exploring ideas. The buggier, the better. You can find a list of what is on my plate here. I will do my best to keep this list up to date, and if you run into something you think belongs on the list, let me know. One can never have too many betas.

3. I am professionally and personally in beta. My life is a constant process of debugging, exploring new functionality, adding new features and, yes, sometimes rewriting legacy code.
2. Forever In Beta reminds me of Neil Diamond's Forever In Blue Jeans, and I am not ashamed to admit that I am a Neil Diamond fan. This blog is the place where I share what I otherwise may not be eager to admit.
I hope this answers those who continue to ask me why I refer to myself (and to my blog) as "forever in beta".
